Typically several versions of gcc et al are available at the same time --
tab-completing on my Debian testing system gives:
gcc-3.4 gcc-4.1 gcc-4.2
and the default gcc is currently

For cutting-edge, there is often a gcc-snapshot package in the 'experimental'
repository but I tend not to install this.
