Yes the issue was reported to exist on both 1.4.3 and 1.5. I have created a ticket to get this fixed - https://svn.open-mpi.org/trac/ompi/ticket/2626
We can patch libtool locally as you suggested.

Should we put in a local patch for OMPI 1.4.x and/or OMPI 1.5?  (we've done this before while waiting for upstream Libtool patches to be released, etc.)
