By specifying --mca pml cm, both traces are using the MTL. To use the
BTL, try:

$ mpiexec --mca btl mx,sm,self -machinefile ./joe -np 2 ./
concurrent_ping

or simply:

$ mpiexec -machinefile ./joe -np 2 ./concurrent_ping
