Right. I still like doing trim_quotes before returning, so
that we're more forgiving in allowing ''both'' of these:

shell_build_command = configure --with-mpi-dir=&test_prefix(); gmake
shell_build_command = "configure --with-mpi-dir=&test_prefix(); gmake"
