For the record this happens with system GCC & GCC 4.4,
Intel compilers and PGI compilers on RHEL 5.6 and CentOS
5.6 (both on our SGI CentOS system and a CentOS box run
by another HPC center). I've even tried with ld from
binutils 2.20.1 which was on our CentOS system with the
same result.

Links OK on SLES9, SLES10 and Ubuntu 11.04.
