Not discouraged at all.
MTLs simply have a different model than BTLs.
In short, MTLs are for networks that have matching semantics built-in (e.g., MX, portals, PSM, tports, ...etc.). BTLs are for everything else (sockets, shared memory, verbs, ...etc.).
