Typically several versions of gcc et al are available at the same time --
tab-completing on my Debian testing system gives:

        edd_at_ron:~> gcc-
        gcc-3.4 gcc-4.1 gcc-4.2

and the default gcc is currently

        edd_at_ron:~> gcc --version
        gcc (GCC) 4.2.3 20071014 (prerelease) (Debian 4.2.2-3)

which is hence what 'mpicc --version' returns as well.

For cutting-edge, there is often a gcc-snapshot package in the 'experimental'
repository but I tend not to install this.
