Yea that makes sense.

So you have a line like:
$ENV{'LD_LIBRARY_PATH'} = "/da/path/";

It started working when I added the following lines to the .cshrc file:

if ($?LD_LIBRARY_PATH) then
else
     setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ""
endif
-----------------------

I assume the 'hangs' were due to the PATH being set correctly, but
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH not being set at all (since before this change it
was never defined in the shell).

That is the only change I made to the system to get it going again.

Not sure what else it could be...
