In the meantime we do need to come up with some basic ideas regarding what
kind of docs we want to create.

Here are my thoughts:

I would like to divide the whole docs into these broad categories:

1. Installation, Troubleshooting, Performance Tuning Open MPI on various platforms

This could go into a User Guide. It should also indicate what the implementation differences are with the standard and concerns for each platform.
2. Simple tutorial style parallel programming with Open MPI. Each
tutorial will have the basic goal of introducing a MPI feature to the
user

So a set of Tutorials.
3. _Cool_ things that people can do with Open MPI

Technical Articles
4. Making Open MPI an attractive option to take advantage of parallel
computing to people from non-parallel computing backgrounds.

Evangelism -- probably on the external website.
May be they are useful thoughts!

This is a good start.
I've started creating pages on the docs project Wiki.
