I seem to recall the lawyers making a big deal about needing the
physical signature on file.

That being said, the community has always been tolerant of "hey, I've
mailed it to you, it'll take a few days to get there, but I'd like to
start contributing right now..." kind of thing. So "good faith" is
exercised; we just need to make sure that all the t's are crossed and
i's are dotted in the short term.
